Can Dogs Eat Apple Sauce?

Yes, dogs can eat apple sauce.

Apple sauce is made from apples which are rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Calcium, and antioxidants. Vitamin C can help support your dog's bones and muscles. Vitamin A helps support their immune system, fur and skin.

Apple sauce: Best serving practice

A great way to integrate applesauce into your dog's food is by adding it to their meals or adding it as an ingredient in homemade treats.  Applesauce should be treated as a treat or an additive to a meal and not a meal in and of itself. The general rule of thumb is applesauce should not make up more than 5% of your dog's dietary intake.

Unlike apples, apple sauce can contain more sugar. It is best to look for organic brands that do not contain additional coloring, preservatives or artificial sweeteners.

  • Avoid Sugar Free Apple Sauce: Check the ingredients to make sure there is no artificial sweeteners (ex. Xylitol). Artificial sweeteners are poisonous to dogs and could be deadly. Also check the nutritional facts. If the Nutrition Facts have "Sugar Alcohol," do not give that applesauce to your dog.

  • Avoid giving applesauce to puppies as their digestive systems are not ready for apples.
